Impulsivity

Do You Ever...?

Do you ever blurt, grab, interrupt, or do something risky and only later think, “Why did I do that?”

That is impulsivity.

What is it?

Impulsivity is acting quickly, with little pause between thought and action. Examples might include:

  • Saying something without thinking about the effect.
  • Interrupting or answering before someone finishes.
  • Doing risky things in the moment.

Why does this happen?

ADHD affects inhibition—the brain’s ability to pause before action. The “go” signal is strong, and the “wait” signal is weaker. Sometimes you want to get a thought out before you lose it, too!

What can I do?

Build a tiny pause.
Practice counting “3–2–1” silently before speaking or acting. Touch your leg or desk as a physical reminder.

Use visual or physical cues.
Wear a bracelet, ring, or hair tie that you can touch as a reminder to pause.

Change your environment.
If you grab your phone nonstop, keep it in another room while working. If you snack impulsively, keep snacks out of arm’s reach.

Repair when things go wrong.
You can say, “I said that too fast, I’m sorry,” or “I interrupted you, please finish.” Repairing builds trust.

Use impulsivity for positives.
Join in group activities, volunteer, help others quickly. Fast action can be a strength when pointed in a good direction.

The Short

Impulsivity is acting quickly without thinking, like blurting out answers, interrupting, or doing something risky and only later wondering “why did I do that?”.

When kids learn to spot their “uh-oh moments,” build in tiny pauses, and use supportive environments, they can stay safer, have fewer conflicts, and still keep their spontaneity and enthusiasm.

Fun Fact!

Because individuals with ADHD often think differently and look at problems from unique perspectives, their impulsivity can make them less afraid to try new things and “think outside the box”. This can be a significant advantage in creative fields, technology, and entrepreneurship.
