Get Moving

Do You Ever...?

Do you ever feel like you think better when you move? Do you fidget, pace, or want to stand instead of sit?

What is it?

Movement can:

  • Increase focus chemicals in the brain.
  • Release extra energy.
  • Improve mood.
  • Help with switching between tasks.

Why does this happen?

Many ADHD brains need more physical movement to feel alert and organized. Sitting still too long can make focusing even harder.

What can I do?

  • Mix movement into work.
Read while standing. Pace while thinking. Use a wobble stool or do wall push-ups during breaks.
  • Take movement breaks.
Work 20–25 minutes, then move for 5 minutes: stretch, walk, jump, dance.
  • Add movement to your day.
Sports, biking, dancing, martial arts, or even regular walks can all help your brain.
  • Ask for movement options at school.
Standing desks, flexible seating, or small jobs that let you move (like passing out papers) can help.

The Short

Movement can help ADHD brains wake up, organize, and release built-up energy, which often improves mood, focus, and self-control. When youth are encouraged to use active breaks, sports, stretching, or even pacing while thinking, they may find schoolwork and chores feel more doable and less frustrating.

Fun Fact!

Fidgeting isn’t a distraction; it’s often a tool for focusing. For individuals with ADHD, these seemingly “extra” movements provide the brain with needed stimulation to stay alert and engaged in a task.
